Just for Parents

So..about this writing business...

Click HERE for a special JUST FOR PARENTS video from Mrs. Crane all about writing in UPK!

I'm guessing as you are spending more and more time at home with your little ones these days you are having questions about what to expect from your child, particularly in the area of reading and writing.  Keep in mind that our expectation in UPK is for children to know the letters in their own name, to be able to write their name and to show interest in & be willing to write and draw.

Take a look at the chart below - it shows the natural progression of children in regards to writing abililites.  I will tell you that all of your children are at least at a stage 2.  Many children don't begin stage 5 or 6 until into Kindergarten.

It is important to keep in mind that writing is a process that takes time.  Encourage your child in whatever he/she is doing well.  It is ok to give a gentle nudge along the way, but the key at this point is for your child to feel great about what they are producing so far and to want to continue to write & draw.

So, no panicking when it is time to write and draw!  I truly want to see what your child is able to do independently - I KNOW all you grown-ups out there are able to do this on your own.😊  Celebrate all that your child is able to do - I know we do!
